The Imprint of Mark Stone |
Mark Stone founded Fen's Rim Publications, Inc., in 1990 with the creation of the Lake Country Gazette. The Gazette was a newsprint periodical that served the northwest Michigan region for 10 years. The publication won several awards and wide recognition as a thoughtful journal that focused on natural resources, politics and in-depth profiles of residents who reach beyond the ordinary. It also had the largest circulation of any publication of the period and a faithful readership. Over the span of 1990–2000, Mark authored over 200 major articles for the Gazette covering a wide variety of topics. During this period, Fen's Rim Publications also published a variety of other publications, including the Stewardship Quarterly periodical, several small books on natural resources management, a handful of local histories, and dozens of special tourism-oriented publications. In the mid-1990s, Mark invented a digital cartography system and within a few years Fen's Rim Publications became the leading publisher of northern Michigan maps. By 2000, the map business had become so important to the company that Fen's Rim ceased publishing the Gazette and focussed entirely on map publishing. In 2003, the name of the company was formally changed to Michigan Maps, Inc., and it unveiled its interactive map system www.MichiganMapsOnline.com—now hugely popular with internet users. Despite the distraction of the map business, Mark Stone has continued to write and publish. In 2005, Mark returns to book publishing under the new imprint of Fen's Rim with the release of The Legend of Punzel's Pond by Judy Hauser. In June, Fen's Rim will release the Glen Lake-Crystal River Watershed Landowner's Handbook. More projects are on the way. More information on Fen's Rim activities will be posted on this website in the future. Please check back. (Last update 3/9/05) Feel free to contact us at the Michigan Maps office:
